Stock Photo - Aapravasi Ghat, Port Louis, Mauritius, Mascarene Islands. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, is where nearly half a million indentured labourers arrived from India between 1834 and 1924 to work on sugar plantations in Mauritius and other destinations they could be sent to. The UNESCO site explains that: “The buildings of Aapravasi Ghat are among the earliest explicit manifestations of what was to become a global economic system and one of the greatest migrations in history.” The picture shows an area known as the Second Yard. The roofed building in the background is where the hospital was. To the right is where sheds to shelter the immigrants were.
