Stock Photo - Abel Janszoon Tasman (1603-1659) was a Dutch seafarer, explorer, and merchant. He is credited as the first European to reach New Zealand and the island off Australia now named for him, Tasmania. His first journal has not survived, but two others have. It is debatable whether they were written by him or not. This illustration, which is taken from Tasman's Journal and is said to have been done by the artist accompanying the expedition, shows Murderers' Bay (present-day Golden Bay in New Zealand) in 1642 and a skirmish between the Dutch and the Maori. It is said to be the first European representation of the Maori people.
