Stock Photo - Aerial view of the natural landmark, called The Stone Wedding, located about 3 kilometers east of the town of Kardzhali, near the village of Zimzelen, some 260 km south-east from the Bulgarian capital Sofia. It is one of the most interesting rock formations in the eastern Rhodope mountain and it is a very popular tourist atraction for people from all around the world. The rock formations reach 10 meters in height and lie on an area of 40 dca. It was declared as a natural landmark by Bulgarian Government order in 1974. According to the scientific hypotheses the phenomen of The Stone Wedding started to forms 40 billion years ago, due to underwater volcanic activity, during the Paleocene, which formed the rock rhyolite tuffs. Later, after the sea receded, the rocks were exposed to rain, wind and sun, which formed them to their current shape. Various minerals in the rock are the reason for the diversity of colors and shades of the rocks.
