Stock Photo - Apr. 04, 1966 - Mushroom Growers Live In Fear. Inhabitants of the villages, Zichen, Zussen and bolder, near the Dutch town of Maastricht, are living in fear owing to the danger of their houses collapsing. Recent heavy rainfalls have caused some of the galleries in the underground mushroom nurseries to collapse. Many of the inhabitants make their living cultivating mushrooms. The ground consists of marl - and in 1958 18 men were killed owing to collapse in the soft marl underground. Zussen is the worst hit, and the people of Pauly farm dare not sleep at their farm owing to a 300 metre subsidence at the front of their house. Mushroom grower, Henri Smets, nearly lost two of his sons last week, owing to new collapses in the galleries. New houses have been built, but owing to ground subsidence they can't be used.
