Veteran cars are now being built as reproductions of the original and this is being done to meet the increasing demand from collectors in many parts of the world. One such vehicle, the 'Surrey', a copy of a horseless carriage popular in the United States in 1900, is now available in Britain, through a Wraysbury, Buckinghamshire, firm as concessionaires. Described as America's newest old car, it is priced at £972, including £287 purchase tax. Though genuine 1900 in appearance, the 'Surrey' has a modern specification. The polished brass headlamps contain sealed-beam lamp units. There flashing direction indicators, the varnished wooden-spoked wheels have pneumatic tyres. There is an electric self-starter, and the single cylinder 4-stroke engine has a semi-automatic centrifugal clutch. The maximum speed in 35 m.p.h. and fuel consumption 70 miles a gallon, and it is chain driven. It complies with the Road traffic acts by having two independent braking systems. It will also be available as a make-it-yourself kit.
