Bilateral thalamic stimulation is used to treat Parkinson’s disease (PD), epilepsy, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and migraines. Electrical stimulation of neural elements considerably improves the symptoms of patients afflicted with PD. Electrodes are stereotactically implanted in the thalamic ventralis intermedius (VIM) after the location is pinpointed using 3D-MRI and the monitoring of cellular activity. The electrode is linked to a cutaneous, programmable stimulator. The intervention can be bilateral. Currently, quadripolar electrodes are generally used.
