Cyprus was first occupied by the British on July 10th 1878, under the terms of the Anglo-Turkish Convention, in devising which, at the Berlin Conference, the diplomacy of Lord Beaconsfield played so important a part. In 1882 the Constitution, with an elected Council, was granted to the Island.
