He was convicted and hanged for the murders in September 1935 of his common-law wife, Isabella Ruxton (nee Kerr), and their housemaid, Mary Jane Rogerson, at their home in Lancaster. The murders are also known as the Bodies under the Bridge and the Jigsaw Murders.
