Stock Photo - Christian F. Ludwig's dissection of the brain. Christian F. Ludwig (1897-1981) was a German anatomist who developed a specific technique for brain dissection which is still used today. His technique involves the dissection of the brain into blocks enabling easier study of its structure. The portions of the brain are first demarcated by using a scalpel and then the blocks of brain tissue are separated individually. The blocks consist of parts of both grey and white matter. This dissection technique was first described in a book by Ludwig entitled Handbuch der Anatomie der Gehirnzentren. His technique has become known as the Ludwig dissection technique and is still used to this day by students and neuroscientists. It is considered a vital dissection technique for detailed neuroscience research and teaching. Ludwig’s technique has also been used in other anatomical regions, including dissections of the lung, stomach, heart, and other body organs.
