Stock Photo - Cuff of linen batist and trimmed around with spools of bobbin lace, Cuff of natural colored linen batist, finished around with natural-colored bobbin lace: old Flemish lace. Model: rectangular linen, with fine pleats in a curved shape. One long side is finished with a wide strip of lace, with a deep scallop edge. The other three sides are finished with narrower strips, with finer scallops. Along the long side with the narrower strip of lace, a mirrored narrow strip of lace is also sewn over the linen. The broad strip has a pattern with ten symmetrical shells within which a flowerpot within volute bands, with heart motifs in between. The flowerpot motif was common in the Flemish bobbin lace around 1630 and originally came from the pattern books of Bartolomeo Danieli. The lace is 'assembled': the small motifs were made piece by piece and then sewn together. This technique emerged at the end of the 16th century and is exclusively associated with the Brussels side. The Flemish lace makers had a very fine linen thread at their disposal that made it possible to make very supple richly decorated lace, which proved ideal for the new flat collars that came into fashion during the first half of the 17th century. The narrow strip of lace has a pattern of symmetrical shells of a stud with a fan-shaped head, with circular arcs in between. These lace types were long-loved in the Republic and can be seen in portraits between 1620 and 1640., anonymous, Netherlands (possibly), c. 1635 - c. 1640, linen (material), batiste, old Flemish lace, l 34 cm × w 17 cm
