Before the memorial service the Duke visited the British Railways Carriage works near York station, escorted by the city's mayor, Alderman Fred Brown, who was employed at the works for 43 years. At the works the Duke met an old shipmate, 55-year-old Thomas Kay, a Royal Navy petty officer until two years ago. Said the Duke: ""Good morning, Chief,"" and they talked of old times.
