Perth, the largest city in southwestern Australia, sits on the western coast near the northern end of the Darling Range of mountains and is visible as a roughly triangular spot of grey on the land. Far to the north of Perth, two-pronged Shark Bay points to the northwest. Shark Bay is a World Heritage Site famous for being home to over 10,000 species of seagrass, manatees (called dugongs in Australia), and the oldest-known form of life: stromatolitic microbialities.
