Driver Harry Pearse sounded his horn for a quarter of a mile as the train hurtled out of control down a gradient into Royton Station. Then, 30 yards from the buffers, the flung himself on to the station platform. Five people, including three women, who had been asleep in the houses were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
