Stock Photo - Feb. 26, 2012 - The English Electric P.1. Supersonic Fighter which was shown in public for the first time to-day at Warton Aerodrome, Lancashire. The P.1 has been ordered for the Royal Air Force, and is being made at the Preston Works of the English Electric Company Ltd. The aircraft has flown faster How the world speed record of 1,132 m .p.h. Comprehensive ground testing of the P.1. aircraft and its components have been carried out. This has included hundreds of hours 'flying' in both low and high speed wind tunnels at Warton and the stressing to destruction of a complete airframe. In addition the prototype aircraft have completed more than 600 proving flights covering handling, performance, stability, gun firing, and a large number of other tests of operational significance. The P.1A has been flown by pilots of the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment, the Royal Aircraft Establishment, the Central Fighter Establishment and Fighter Command of the R.A.F.
