In the background are v.l.n.r. recognize the columns of the S. Maria sopra Minerva, the Pantheon and the pyramid of Caius Cestius. Above the columns of S. Maria spora Minerva the letters 'SPQR' are clearly visible, the abbreviation for 'senatus populusque Romanus' (Senate and people of Rome). The central cartouche is surrounded by a symmetrical structure of golden accanthus leaves and volutes. Possibly this painting was intended as an imitation of the silver-inlaid inlaid turtle frames that came into fashion at the end of the 17th century.
