On October 24th 1914, when the great Battle of the Coast was raging between Nieuport and Ypres and when the British warships were shelling the German positions, German submarines, which had invaded the British mine-field north and west of Ostend, made many daring attempts to get home torpedo attacks, which were successfully foiled by the presence of several British protecting destroyers.
