Stock Photo - I have many times asked myself whether there can be more potent advocates of peace upon earth through the years to come than this massed multitude of silent witnesses to the desolation of war. - King George V during a visit in 1922. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker, it is the largest British war cemetery in the world with 11.871 graves and 34,926 names of those killed Aug 1917 - Nov 1918 and who have no known grave. The original cemetery with 350 graves was based around a pill box which now forms the base of the Cross of Sacrifice: this was a German bunker which was then turned into an Aid Post.
