Stock Photo - Jan. 01, 1971 - New Low priced General Purpose Electron Microscope: A new election microscope was given public showing for the first time today, at St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, where it is being used for research on male fertility control. It has been developed by Polaron Instruments Ltd. of Watford, Herts, with the support of the National Research Development Corporation and of Technical Development Capital Ltd. Most electron microscopes are high resolution instruments costing around £20,000. For 90% of the time, however, instruments are not used at high resolutions. So Polaron concentrated on designing a medium resolution instrument at a lower cost. Cost was will still further reduced by utilising a novel approach to lens design without otherwise limiting flexibility or limiting the performance. Photo shows the MR 60 electron microscope seen being used today by Prof. Dennis Lacy of the Zoology Department at St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School the first man to use the new microscope.
