His Storrows of Young Werther (1774) was an epistolary novel of morbid sensitiveness, and won him immediate fame. He then accepted an invitation to the court of Charles Augustus, duke of Saxe-Weimar and stayed there for the rest of his life. He llater favored classicism. Among his best-known works are Iphigenie auf Tauris and Wilheml Meisters Lehrjahre. He was a good friend of Schiller. He was a scientists and he influenced spinoza.
