Skipjack shattered all existing submarine speed records during builder's trials by going more than 3. knots while submerged,thanks to a radically new blimp shaped hull.The ship also dived to a depth of about 400 feet during these trials. Built by the General Dynamic Corporation'sElectric boat division,Groton,Conn. Skipjack is the sixth nuclear ship to join the US Fleet.Commissioned April 15 she,along with USS Nautilus and USS Skate Form part of squadron ten of the Atlantic fleet submarine force base din New London,Conn. Theodore S. Maites,YN3 West Columbia South Carolina mans the controldevice of the USS Skipjack.This single sensitive master wheel similar to that of an airplane controls ascent,decent and turning of the Skipjack.
