Stock Photo - Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, 1953. Vintage postcard. The Liberty Bell is one of the foremost symnols of the American Revolution. Originally housed in the bell tower of Independence Hall, it was rung to announce the opening of the First Continental Congress in 1774, after the Battle of Lexington and Concord in 1775 and (according to tradition) on 8 July 1776 to summon the citizens of Philadelphia to hear the reading of the Declaration of Independence. It was removed from the bell tower in 1852 after cracks in the metal made it unusable.
