Mountain goats have specific physical characteristics adapted to the climate and environment of their habitats. They have thick, shaggy coats of fur to protect them from the cold and wet conditions of the mountains, and their cloven hooves allow them to climb on steep rocks and other uneven terrain. They have horns that are at least four inches long, and allow them to defend themselves against predators. Both males and females have horns, but males tend to have larger and more curved horns that make them look more impressive. Since the horns are hollow, the males use them to produce loud noises that can be heard from a considerable distance. The horns are usually shed at the end of winter and new ones begin to grow in the spring. Mountain goats are socially complex animals, living in groups of related individuals along with other species such as chamois, deer, and wild boar. They are incredibly agile climbers, and can often be seen scaling the steep mountain walls. They mainly feed on grasses, herbs, and lichens.
