Stock Photo - Mar. 03, 1961 - Naval Survey Ship In Antarctica Lands ' Robinson Crusoe' For Two Years: The Royal Naval Surveying ship H.M.S Owen, retracing the first and last stages of Darwin's 1831 cruise in H.M.S. Beagle, has arrived in South Georgia to begin the work of revising Antarctic charts. At Gough Island she picked up her medical officer who had spent a month ashore tending the needs of lonely islanders at Tristan de Cunha. The ship landed members of her surveying party with British Scientists to study this ' naturalist's paradise' . At Elsehul, after steaming past icebergs in dense fog, the ship picked her company who had been surveying ashore, nd took on board the three extremely rare South Georgian teal which are being brought home for the Seven Wildfowl Trust. At an isolated cove in uncharted waters between Ducloz Head and South Undine Harbour, the ship said farewell to author and explorer, Duncan Carse , before putting him and his supplies ashore for his solitary two-year 'Robinson Crusoe' existence. Before he left the ship he received H.M.S. Owen's crest from her captain,. Commander G.P.D. hall, D.S.C., R.N. after being embarked for five months. Photo shows H.M.S.
