On board were the more seriously wounded of the prisoners and a number of blinded men.Among them was the 31-years-old Marquis of Normanby, who was wounded and captured at Dunkirk. He was serving as a Lieutenant in the Green Howards. In a German prison camp he taught 30 blinded Allied captivos to pick out the alphabet with matchsticks, and afterwards had Braille equipment sent out so that the men were taught to fit themselves for post-war life.
