It was based on the chassis of the M13/40 tank and was armed with a 75/18 gun. The vehicle was designed and built in 1942, and was produced in limited numbers. It saw service in the Italian Army in North Africa and in the Eastern Front in the Battle of Stalingrad. It was successfully used against enemy infantry and lightly-armored vehicles, although it was especially vulnerable to anti-tank weapons. The Semovente M 40 da 75/18 3 was eventually superseded by the more advanced Semovente da 75/46 self-propelled gun.
