Stock Photo - Mussel farmer and crofter Peter MacAskill pioneered mussel farming on ropes in Skye, Scotland in 1987. Trading as Loch Eishort Mussel Culture, he works seasonally in the business with his son, Ian and a part timer. The mussel spat or baby shellfish begin to settle out of the plankton on to ropes hung in the water in late summer. After 18 months of feeding in the currents they are ready for harvest. The ropes are stripped of the mussel harvest which is washed , cleaned, sorted and packed into bags before shipping live to wholesalers.
