Stock Photo - NAIL, DRAWING<BR>Nails, like hair and teeth, are skin appendages which are part of the integumentary system. The nails are hard, protective, horn-like flattened structures made up of keratin which form at the ends of the fingers and toes. Nails grow slowly. They have a root, or matrix, hidden beneath the skin at the proximal end. The nail plate is the visible part of the nail and in healthy individuals is usually smooth, flat and pink-colored. At its base is a crescent-shaped white area known as the lunula. Brittle nails are a sign of vitamin deficiency. Fungal infections may alter nail color.
