He was the pilot of the 1,300 m.p.h Pl Lightning jet fighter which crashed into the sea. He was missing and presumed dead, then he stumbled ashore near Carlieston, Wigtownshire about 30 miles from the point of the crash having been adrift in the escape dinghy for thirty hours searching aircraft and ships having seen no trace of him.
