But after the Greek churches finished their thanksgiving services, crowds of youths carrying the Greek Flag, marched into Metaxas Square, Nicosia, and touched off a full day of rioting. Cyprus Police assisted by British Troops, wearing gas masks, cleared street after street with tear gas and baton charges against a hail of stones and catapults, used by the mobs.
