The incident which sparked off the argument between Nicklaus and Colonel Tony Duncan the referee, came after Nicklaus had hooked his ball into a ditch. He was told by Duncan that he could lift the ball and count a penalty stroke. Having done this Nicklaus found that a signpost impeded his view, so he asked permission to drop the ball again without penalty this was refused by referee Duncan. After the incident Colonel Duncan asked to be relieved and his place was taken by Gerald Micklem. Photo shows Jack Nicklaus (left) and Gary Player cheer the balls while waiting to start their game.
