Already some have found themselves out of work and forced to 'sign out' at the employment exchanges. A few have been reduced to drawing Social Security benefit. They are classified as 'self-employed' and are therefore not entitled to unemployment benefit or redundancy money. Roma Catholic priests are not affected as they are certain to be guaranteed work of some kind by their church. The Rev. John Toon, 42, who gave up his Leicestershire Parish to go to Canada, has been drawing social security for his wife and four children since returning last June to Mertfordshire.
