Stock Photo - Onboard a KC-135 aircraft, astronaut Robert L. Curbeam uses a “step gage” to insure that the tile repair does not protrude more than .025 inches past the orbiter outer mold line (OML) on a damaged section of thermal tiles. The aircraft flew a series of special parabolas to afford a number of zero-g “windows” for rehearsing extravehicular activity (EVA) tasks for repairing damaged Shuttle tiles. Astronaut Rex J.
