Stock Photo - Sep. 07, 1967 - Elephant dies at London zoo: The African elephant called Diksie, died yesterday at the London Zoo. She had been catching food thrown by spectators when another elephant tried to bump it out of the way. Diksie fell five feet into the trench built in front of the elephant compound and could not get to its feet. Not even the Zoo's crane could life the elephant. Diksie nearly pulled it over. A stronger crane was brought, but it was too late. Diksie died before she could be rescued. She was in the trench four hours. Diksie, aged 27 and the oldest of the Zoo's four elephants, weighed four tons. Photo shows Zoo officials struggling to get Diksie one her feet after she had been pushed by another elephant into the pit surrounding their paddock at London Zoo yesterday. She died before she could be rescued. (Credit Image: © Keystone Press Agency/Keystone USA via ZUMAPRESS.com)
