Stock Photo - Sep. 09, 1951 - Paintings Thought To Be Eight Hundred Years Old. Discovery At Coombes Paris Church. Mural paintings estimated to be 800 years old, have been uncovered in Coombes Parish Church, Sussex, by archaeologist Mr. E.G. Rouse - who describe them as being among the finest uncovered in this country in the last century. The paintings were discovered in the Chancel under layers and layers of plaster and paint all of which had to be carefully chipped away. So far Mr. Rouse has not yet touched the South Wall of the Churoh, The paintings were first discovered by workmen repainting a window in the Church and Mr. Rouse was called in before damage could be done to them He expects that it will take another year before they can be fully revealed Photo Shows:- Mr. E.C.
