Their escape cost them nearly -1,000 - -350 of it bail money forfeited in their dash for freedom. Retired Army brigadier Charles Phillpotts, 51, his wife Margaret, 46, and their daughter Janet, 5, docked at Tilbury in the 24,000-ton liner-rton which they boarded at Gibraltar. In the hold of the ship was their car also smuggled out of Spain. Exactly how they got away from Spain, where Mrs. Phillpotts faced charges of obstruction and assaultinga policeman, must remain a secret, because as Mrs. Phillpotts said it would get other people into trouble.
