Simone has never played in Shakespeare before, never seen a Shakespeare production, never played in the theatre in Britain before. Sir Alec, grey-bearded for his part, said he honestly didn't know why he thought of Simone Signoret as Lady Macbeth. It just came out while discussing the possibility of doing the play with William Gaskill, director of the Royal Court. 'I said I would do it if we get someone very interesting to play Lady Macbeth and I said 'Simone Signoret just like that. I hadn't even thought about it before. I didn't think she would do it for one minute, but in fact she chucked a Hollywood film and a play for it.'
