Stock Photo - Slender Burnet, Zygaena loti has a peculiar oblong red spot at the base of the wings. Side view of a burnet hanging on a dead weed. Zygaenidae moths are found in temperate climate. The red spots are warning of hydrogen cyanide which is a toxin, but the toxin is inherent to the insect and not by-product of food. HCN is significant element of Prussian blue. Chalcosiinae and Zygaeninae store hydrogen cyanide in cavities which they can use as defense mechanisms on an attacker.
