Many ancient Greek tales speak of their struggles with the gold_guarding gryphons in the Hyerborean lands near the cave of Boreas, the North Wind. In this Roman painting, a figure in Scythian clothing battles a gryphon or griffin, a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head, talons and wings of an eagle.
