Stock Photo - The Aswan Dam was built to regulate the flooding of the River Nile ensuring year round reliable irrigation. The first dam was built in 1899 by the British,and inproved twice in the early 20th century. Despite these improvements the dam nearly overflowed in 1946 and the decision was made to build a second dam upriver. The Soviet Union helped to fund the project in 1958 and to mark this alliance a friendship monument designed by Ernst Neizvestny was erected in 1971.
