Stock Photo - The city of Hierapolis was surrounded by a vast collection of tombs made from local stone. It is one of the best preserved of the ancient cemeteries in Turkey. A necropolis of this size is extremely rare. It contains tumuli, sarcophagi and house_shaped tombs. The latter were family tombs _ large tombs housing an entire family. Hierapolis _ Pamukkale was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
