Stock Photo - The memorial stupa at the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. Between 1975 and 1978 about 17,000 women, men, and children were transported to this extermination camp by the Khmer Rouge. They were often beaten to death and dumped in mass graves. The remains of nearly 9,000 people were exhumed in 1980, while many of the mass graves remain untouched. Fragments of human bone and bit s of clothing can still be seen around the pits. The stupa contains the skulls of more than 8,000 of the victims.
