The Greek epic poet Homer wrote about the war in his poems ""Iliad"" and ""Odyssey. "" While the details are mythical, excavations at Troy have found evidence of a great war, sometime around 1184 B. C. The heroes pictured in this early 1900s illustration are, from left to right: Menelaus (Greek king of Sparta and wife of Helen), Paris (Trojan prince and son of Priam, stole Helen), Diomedes (Greek hero who becomes king of Argos), Ulysses (also called Odysseus, Greek ruler of Ithaca and husband of Penelope), Nestor (wise Greek king of pylos), Achilles (great hero of Trojan War who killed Trojan prince Hector), and Agamemnon (Greek king of Mycenae).
