The Pont Saint Benezet, which connects the center of Avignon to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, is a medieval bridge built over the Rhône between 1177 and 1185. It is made up of four stone arches which rise more than 20 meters above the above the water. The bridge was built by the Order of Canons of Saint Benezet, after whom the bridge is named. Over the centuries, the bridge has been damaged by the Rhone, which has washed away many of the arches of the bridge. In 1992 the bridge was restored and became a tourist site. It is today a symbol of the city of Avignon and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
