Stock Photo - The US 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment was given the Operation Market Garden task of capturing this position and completed the clearing of the area on 17 September 1944, the first day of the Operation. General Maxwell Taylor, Commanding the 101st Airborne Division to which the 502nd belonged, establised his HQ here, and it was also used as a distribution centre for food rationing coupons. A plaque just inside the entrance says 'This vital road junction was liberated by the 502nd PIR on 17 September 1944 with the assistance of the Dutch underground and held against repeated enemy attacks. This plaque is in honour of the 'Screaming Eagles' who gave their lives and as a token of esteem and friendship for the people of the Netherlands. Placed by Comrades of the 101st Airborne Division Association. 1969'.
