Stock Photo - This woodcut showing pilgrims in procession against the plague was done in the first half of the 1500s by German woodcut artist Michael Ostendorfer. From the mid-1300s to the 1600s, the plague struck Europe several times, causing great loss of life. Many Christians would process at churches and areas considered sacred, asking for help and protection. Here some pray, others process, others are too weak and have fallen, still others have died. In front of the church is a staue of the Virgin Mary with Jesus. And a banner of Mary and Jesus is attached to the steeple.
