Looking towards the "Hammerhead" sector of Mametz Wood which was attacked by the 16th Welsh Cardiff City Batt & Gwent Batts of the SWB on 7th July 1916. They attacked across this open ground and the attack wasa total failure - no covering fire or smokescreen. The attack was renewed three days later when they reached the wood but it was not until late on the 11th that the Germans withdrew from the wood.
