Mr Schonhut's family originated from the German city of Obernhof. The family settled in Mexborough in South Yorkshire in the years prior to World War I. Despite some persecution stemming from the German origins of his name, Mr Schonhut refused to anglicise the family name. The butchery business flourished for three geneations as both retailers and as a wholesaler to other businesses in the area.
