It was a relatively advanced vehicle, and Crossley describes it as ""one of the best foreign designs of the period"". It was constructed from mildly sloped armor, which ranged in thickness from 25 mm (1 in) to 47 mm (2 in). It was powered by a 10.8 litre SOMUA V-8 engine, which produced up to 140 hp, giving it a top speed of 36 km/h (22 mph). It was armed with a 47 mm SA 35 L/34 gun and two 7.5 mm (0.3 in) machine guns. It also had a range of up to 250 km (155 miles). It saw action in the Battle of France, as well as in North Africa, Italy, and even on the Eastern Front. About 1,200 of these tanks were built. The Somua S-35 number 54 on trailer is an example of one such tank, and it is now on display at the Musée des Blindés in Saumur, France.
