This hand-colored photograph was taken by a photographer named Kimbei Kusakabe sometime between 1880 and 1899. The photograph shows the Yomei Mon, or Great Gate, located at the Nikko Toshogu in Nikko, Japan. The architecture of the gate has been painted with bright colors, a sign of reverence as many temples and shrines in Japan were traditionally brightly colored. This photograph is the earliest known surviving photograph of the Yomei Mon, and photographs of this type were quite rare at the time, making it a particularly valuable piece.
